Last week I foolishly announced that Summer was well and truly here: I stand by that announcement but I should have qualified it by also saying that doesn’t not mean that good weather is here to stay. My 6 Top Tips are below but it is worth reading the full blog below;

1. Don’t Let Low Cloud be a Surprise – You should always consult the weather forecast during the planning phase of your walk and again on the morning of the walk.

2. Take Low Visibility Into Your Planning – consider walking at lower altitude or ensure you drop down below the cloud to take a peak!

3. There is Nothing Wrong With Not Going! – The braver decision may be to postpone unless you are confident about your navigational skills – the hills will always be there!

4. Think Timings – You will walk more slowly in poor visibility and you will be stopping more often to check your position. So vector slower progress into your planning calculations.

5.   Know How to Escape to Safety – You should always consider escape routes for every walk you plan. If you know poor visibility is likely they could become essential so think carefully about how and where you would get off the hill and to safety.

6.   Mist and Cloud is Wet(!) – Think Kit – It seems obvious when you see it written down but often people do forget that low cloud and mist are forms of water vapour and you will get wet when walking in low visibility unless you are wearing the right kit.

As ever, if you have any questions give me a call on 01239821631 or fill in the enquiry form on this website.

Keep safe!
